James McNamee (he/him)
MEd, LCPC - Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor

My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe space where clients feel heard and understood. This may seem like a simple idea, but in reality, most people rarely experience this on a regular basis, if ever. While people often seek counseling when they are not feeling emotionally well or due to stressful issues in their lives, what they are often looking for is acceptance. In life, many of us make decisions that we may not be proud of, or think a certain part of our identity is less beneficial to the person we want to be. Perhaps we struggle alone in our battles, as others have simply dismissed our behaviors or choices. People in our lives may have formed judgments about our past actions or missteps, or been critical, which can make positive change even more difficult. I want everyone to whom I provide help to experience true acceptance. I strongly believe that once people experience true acceptance, they are often then ready to explore issues around negative thought patterns, unhealthy relationships, and poor coping mechanisms.

I have worked in the mental health field for over 20 years in school settings, community mental health, group homes, and outpatient settings. I have also been lucky enough to be involved with a local LGBTQIA organization for the past six years as a volunteer therapist. This has truly been one of the most fulfilling roles I have had in the field.

I utilize an integrated model of therapy that can include psychodynamic principles, Person-centered techniques, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. With many theories and techniques at my disposal, I am able to specifically cater to my clients’ needs. I will often ask my clients what is working for them and what is not. With this information, we may tweak some things that we have already been doing or begin exploring other techniques that may yield better outcomes. I believe that this collaboration between the client and therapist is the key to successful treatment and positive change.
